Background
Sevim Akcelik is a fully-accredited Professional Translator for the English and Turkish languages, in both directions. She has been providing language services since 1982 and is well known for being a leader in her profession. Sevim has translated thousands of documents for clients in Australia and from around the world.
She holds a number of degrees, including a NAATI Accreditation as a Professional Translator, University of Cambridge and Institute of Linguistics Certificates in English, an MBA, Graduate Diploma in Management, Diploma in Financial Management, Bachelor of Arts (Multicultural Studies). Also, studied BA in Computing studies and BA in Law.
Sevim has worked in a cross-cultural environment, particularly in the language services area for 30 years. For almost two decades, she worked as the Chief Executive Officer of a leading language service providing support to the health and human resources industries in Australia. She held an outstanding record of success in that position, with many notable achievements throughout the Victorian Medical, Health and Aged Care Sectors. Sevim has authored, co-written and contributed to numerous reference books, guides and articles (see “Publications”) relating to the translation of the Turkish and English languages.
As a Professional Translator, apart from she published translations such as “Living in Australia – Avustralya’da Ya?am” (Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs 1984), Sevim is proud of the “Cultural Background paper: Turkey” (which she co-authored with Dr Akçelik) published by the Department of Education and Youth Affairs, and the Glossary of Legal Terms she compiled while at the Legal Interpreting Service of the Victorian Ethnic Affairs Commission 1986.
She is also proud of her activities in the area of cross-cultural communication where she designed, organised and conducted an extensive program of workshops for health and legal professionals with the objective of developing the skills of professionals in interacting with people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
